NetVane is a Windows network scanner and security monitor built on a contrarian premise: security software should not require surrendering your network's data to a cloud. Everything — discovery, device identification, vulnerability matching, scoring, history — runs on the user's own machine, and a live egress ledger in the app shows exactly how many outbound requests were made (“0 internet requests” during a scan) so the privacy claim is auditable rather than rhetorical.
A scan discovers every device, names it (“Ring doorbell”, “Sonos speaker”) using an offline fingerprint table, and surfaces exposures with plain-language explanations and step-by-step fixes. Detected service versions are matched against a bundled NVD + CISA-KEV database — known-exploited issues first, then ranked by exploit probability (EPSS). Findings can be actively validated with non-destructive probes, and a class of exposures can be fixed with one click — every action consented, snapshotted, undoable and logged. Paid editions add unattended monitoring: scheduled scans, new-device and change alerts, and, in Business, a compliance evidence report and an evidence pack with an integrity checksum for consultants and small businesses. Pricing is one-time ($19 Pro / $99 Business); the free edition covers knowing your network, permanently, with no account.
Claims you can verify yourself
- “Nothing about your network leaves your machine” — watch the in-app Local-only panel's egress ledger during a scan; it counts every outbound request the app can make.
- Offline vulnerability matching — disconnect from the internet and scan; CVE/KEV results still appear (the database is bundled).
- Under 25 MB, signed — check the installer's size and its Authenticode signature (publisher: GRCSAC) in Properties → Digital Signatures.
- No admin rights — the per-user installer never triggers UAC.
- Licences verify offline — activation works on a machine with no internet connection.
What NetVane is not
Honest scoping beats a takedown of your review. NetVane is not an enterprise vulnerability-management platform, not a penetration-testing tool, and not feature parity with Nessus — our own comparison page says where Nessus is stronger. It is the useful core — exposure, vulnerability intelligence, prioritisation, remediation — for the networks that will never buy a $4,790/year scanner.
